Ushers Needed
East Central College is presenting their spring musical, “Once on This Island” on
March 19-22nd. Thursday-Saturday’s show times are at 8:00 p.m. and Sunday’s show starts at 2:00 p.m. Volunteers are needed to usher this event.
Ushers are required to show up early and to wear black slacks and a white shirt. You will be responsible for helping to seat guests and passing out programs for the event. Ushers are also allowed to stay and enjoy the show!
Step-Out for Diabetes
Millions of people are diagnosed with diabetes, and millions of people can help fight to find a cure. Join the ‘Step Out: Walk to Fight Diabetes’ team forming in our area!
Each year, a team forms to walk a few miles to bring greater awareness of this devastating disease to our community and to raise funds for the cause. You don’t have to be an athlete; you just have to care!
This year’s walk will take place on April 18th around
Lions
Lake at
Hillerman
Park in
Washington. It is a beautiful setting for what can be such a personally awarding experience to participate in.
Plenty of food and drinks are provided to all participants. In the past years, several merchants and local healthcare establishments have had representatives attending with freebies, important information, and sometimes items for sale with a portion contributed to the funds raised for the event.
Last year’s walk was a lot of fun and a big success. This year we expect it will be just as grand! For more information see the link on our chapter’s website or contact Kristen Zeiser at kazeiser@gmail.com.
Music Festival
ECC is hosting the district high school music festival March 27-28th. A large number of volunteers are needed and are usually given a four-hour shift. More information will be sent out to FQK members via email. For more information contact Mr. Aaron Bounds at 636-583-5195 ext. 2338 or akbounds@eastcentral.edu.

Recognition at Regional Convention
Over the last weekend of February, Chi Delta (Union) and Beta Omicron
Phi (Rolla) chapters of Phi Theta Kappa attended the 2009 Missouri Regional
Convention in Springfield, MO. Attendees were able to learn more about Phi
Theta Kappa programs and network with fellow members and advisors from
around the state.
During the awards ceremony, each chapter received recognition through
the Hallmark Awards Program. To qualify chapters must participate in a list
of activities each year designed to allow for exploring the society’s hallmarks
of Scholarship, Leadership, Service, and Fellowship. Chapters set a goal to
reach based on the number of activities they plan to hold in a calendar year.
For activities completed in 2008, the Union chapter received a certificate in
recognition of reaching the 5-Star Chapter level. The Rolla chapter received
a certificate for earning the 3-Star Chapter status. This is no small feat
considering the Rolla chapter is only in their second year of existence and
have a small number of members in their group.
Officers and members of Chi Delta prepared and submitted details on the
chapter’s activities related to the society’s hallmarks. Chi Delta won an award
for its entry in the Service Hallmark category. Recognition was also given to
outstanding individuals in several categories. From our chapter, Kristen
Zeiser won in the Distinguished Chapter President category, Olga
Zaharova, our chapter Vice-President, was named a Distinguished Chapter
Officer, and Angela Vincent earned a Distinguished Chapter Member award.
If you know any of these ladies, please join us in extending
congratulations for the recognition of their outstanding work and dedication to
the success of the chapter, and for their service to their fellow members, the
college, and the community. We cannot say “THANK YOU” enough to
them, and to all active chapter members, for the hard work they do.
We also extend congratulations to chapter advisors, Beth Winters-Rozema
and Kevin Dixon, for their Horizon Awards presented by the regional
coordinator in recognition of their service to the Missouri Region.
Thank you to everyone who assisted in preparing all of the award
nominations, and to the ECC faculty members and advisors who took time
out of their busy schedules to prepare letters of recommendation for the
recognized individuals.
Child I.D. Program at International Festival
This year during the International Festival we will once again be assisting
with the Child Identification program (CHIPS). Volunteers are needed
anytime between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. to do such duties as data entry, taking
pictures, etc. This program provides parents with a current photo,
fingerprints, and important information about their children all on one
convenient disc to provide to law enforcement officers in the event their child
may become missing.
According to the 2007 Annual Report from the National Center for
Missing and Exploited Children 2000 children are reported missing
everyday. That same year, they had their highest number of recoveries yet
out of their total 24 years of operation. The success rate had increased from
62 percent in 1990 to 96 percent!
The success of this foundation relies heavily on the cooperation with local
law enforcement agencies. The information law enforcement officers provide
to the foundation can only come from the families of the missing children.
Therefore, the CHIPS program is very important and the success of it
counts on you! In past years, this program brought in huge numbers of
families to take advantage of this highly important and FREE opportunity.
Volunteers are still needed to help with this during the International Festival.
The sign-up sheet is just outside the FQK office in the MP building, or
contact an advisor or officer.

Craft Fair
In lieu of the Girl Scout badge workshop, this year the Chi Delta chapter
of Phi Theta Kappa is going to be hosting a craft fair on Saturday March 14th
from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The cost of tables for the vendors is $20 each. The funds raised from this
event will be used for various projects/events that we do throughout the
semester, including sending members to conferences, Relay for Life, and the
Diabetes Walk.
This will be the first semester our chapter has taken on such a project and
will need members to help coordinate the event. We will meet in the RTC
building here on campus at 5 p.m. on Friday, March 13th to help crafters set
up and to put up signs. We will also need volunteers on Saturday March 14th
from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. to help run the event itself.
Anyone interested in volunteering, or would like to rent a table, or knows
someone who would like to rent a table are encouraged to contact Kevin
Dixon at kdixon@eastcentral.edu or Kristen Zeiser at kazeiser@gmail.com.
This will count as a Service project toward those of you who are working
toward your 5-star.
