Members’ Meetings

This fall our meeting days are: the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays and Thursdays every month in MP103. On Wed. our meeting time is at 11:45 a.m. and on Thur. at 5:00 p.m. We hope this enables more of our day and evening members to be in attendance.

Trivia Contest

Please join us at our next members’ meeting, Oct. 1st at 11:45 a.m. in room MP103. We will have a trivia contest and there will be prizes for the winners!

This is a good chance for our new and current members to come together and have some fun getting to know one another. This will count as an honors activity towards your Five Star level!

Chi Delta Bake Sale!

Phi Theta Kappa will be hosting a bake sale on Oct. 13th from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the AD lobby. If you would like to donate baked goods or help with the sale that day, please contact your chapter president, Kristen Zeiser.

New Member Induction

Chi Delta’s new member induction will be held this Friday, October 3rd at 7:00 p.m. in the John Edson Anglin Performing Arts Center at East Central College. Our alumni association, Delta of Missouri, will be providing refreshments after the ceremony.

Inductees, please report to Kevin Dixon the number of people you expect to be present in your party. Please, dress nicely (business/church attire) and arrive by 6:00 p.m. for pictures and ceremony preparations.

Falcon Fest (All Campus Day)

This fall’s Falcon Fest will be on Oct. 15th with “School Spirit” as the theme! Each club on campus will have a booth with activities, so there will be a variety of things to do, see, or eat!

Phi Theta Kappans…we will be planning for Falcon Fest at our Oct. 1st and 2nd meetings so please come share your ideas! We will also need volunteers to help with the event itself.

Adopt-A-Highway

Student Senate and Phi Theta Kappa will be working together on Oct. 17th at 2:00 p.m. to clean up a portion of the roadside near East Central College. Meet up in BC138 prior to clean up.

Theater Productions

Ushers are needed for many of the theater productions coming up. The first production is called “Cover of Life” and is on October 10th and 11th. Ushers are required to show up early and to wear black slacks and a white shirt. You will be responsible for helping to seat guests and passing out programs for the events.

Katy Trail Clean-up

October 25th Phi Theta Kappa is hosting the Katy Trail Clean-up and a barbecue to follow. We have contacted other chapters in our region to see if they would like to join us also. If you would like to attend please contact one of our officers or sign-up on our bulletin board. We will be meeting at 8:30 a.m. in the lower parking lot of ECC to carpool if interested.

Hello everyone and welcome back to school! My name is Heather Ottinger and I am the Public Relations Secretary for East Central College’s Phi Theta Kappa chapter, Chi Delta. I am delighted to be able to contribute to our chapter in such an exciting way. I will do my best in keeping our members informed and up-to-date with all the opportunities that are available to them. I am somewhat new to Phi Theta Kappa myself so I can’t wait to meet more of you and to see more members getting involved!

Phi Theta Kappa's mission is to recognize and encourage the academic achievement of two-year college students and to provide opportunities for individual growth and development through participation in honors, leadership, service, and fellowship activities.

I encourage our members to be involved as much as possible. Notice, to the left is a quick reference list of all the upcoming activities. These are not merely occasions in which we can volunteer, but they are opportunities in which we can meet new people, form relationships, and have fun!

There are a variety of different opportunities to be active and to earn your “Five Star” status. Members who have very busy hours would be surprised to know that, at times, there are ways to participate without even leaving your own home, or participation can be arranged around your own schedule! For such opportunities, check out the “Trivia Night” and “Bake Sale” articles for more information. See November’s newsletter for more information on how to achieve the Five Star level and why.

College President Q&A

Did you ever say to yourself, “I wish there were a ____ on campus,” “If it were done like this, it’d be so much easier,” or “I’ve got a great idea, who do I share it with?” If so, this is your opportunity to get those statements and questions addressed by someone who can make things happen! Join the Student Senate and other campus organizations at their next meeting on Friday, October 3rd at 1 p.m. in room BC138 for an exciting and informative assembly. East Central College’s president, Dr. Ed Jackson, will be at this meeting to address student questions and concerns. This is one busy man and it is very thoughtful of him to take the time out to talk with his student body. This opportunity is too important to pass up! Refreshments will be provided.

  Have a Safe, Happy Halloween!

Honors Conference

This year’s Honors Conference is being held in Potosi on Nov. 14-16th. This conference provides us an opportunity to meet members from other chapters within our region to share ideas for projects and to learn more about our Honors Study Topic. If you are interested in attending this conference or would like more information please contact Kevin Dixon as soon as possible because the registration deadline is approaching.

Our Honors Study Topic is “The Paradox of Affluence” and you can find more information about it at the following Phi Theta Kappa website: http://www.ptk.org/honors/guide/

Meet the Candidates

October 20th from 6-9:00 p.m., local and nationwide candidates will be present for “Meet the Candidates” in the John Edson Anglin Performing Arts Center at East Central College. Volunteers are needed for this event.

For more information on this event or to volunteer contact Brad Bruns, the Student Activities Coordinator at bjbruns@eastcentral.edu.

Food Drive

After all the flooding in and around our area, our local food pantries have become drained. (Pardon the pun!) Therefore, Student Senate is sponsoring a food drive Oct. 1st -15th. Items that can be donated include: canned foods, peanut butter/jelly, sugar, flour, cereals, etc. You may not realize, but toiletries are also provided by some of these places so feel free to donate some of those too!

Phi Theta Kappans listen up! There is going to be a competition between all the clubs on campus to see who can collect the most donations so let’s get those donations rolling in! More info to come at the next Student Senate meeting Oct. 3rd.

Trivia Night

Volunteers are still needed for Trivia Night, to be held on November 7th. We need volunteers to research trivia questions, collect donations from businesses, and to help during the event itself. If you don’t get to volunteer often due to schedule conflicts, this is your opportunity to contribute to your club whenever it’s convenient for you. Researching trivia questions can be done anytime, day or night! Collecting donations could be squeezed in before, after, or in between classes and work.

The night of the event, we will need volunteers to set up tables, pass out prizes, clean up afterwards, etc. If you would like to help with this event you can sign up on the Phi Theta Kappa bulletin board. If you know of anyone who would like to form a group or join a group to participate in the contest itself please refer them to Kevin Dixon.

*You can earn EC Cash points at many of these events.
